Liam Byrne, Labour’s Shadow Mayor of the West Midlands, is stepping up his call for evidence of Government PPE failures following new statistics from Birmingham City Council showing that key workers are being let down by Government failures.

Liam said: “I know Councils across the region are working extremely hard to ensure that their key workers have the PPE they need but they are being consistently let down by the Conservative Government. Good intentions and glossy plans mean nothing unless those on the front line get the protective equipment they need and deserve. That’s why I am asking anyone who has a story to tell to visit and share it with me.”

In its briefings to MPs, Birmingham City Council described the current process of obtaining and distributing PPE in regions biggest city as “hand to mouth” and exposed that PPE deliveries from the Government “consistently contained date expired stock or items that have failed safety tests”. Figures included in the briefing show that there are just 80 FFP3 masks available to City Council staff.

Liam added, “It is shocking that the Government has been providing out of date equipment to local authorities. Every key worker in Birmingham and the West Midlands deserves to be protected. It cannot be right that our own Government sends our PPE that is out of date and not up to standard. Either they know the PPE isn’t good enough and they don’t care or they haven’t got grip. Whatever it is, it is letting down the people we should be helping most.”
