West Midlands Labour MPs and Peers urge Prime Minister to “get the deal done” on Brexit

Liam Byrne MP, Shadow Mayor for the West Midlands, has joined Labour MPs and Peers from across the region to demand Prime Minister Boris Johnson Avoids a no-deal Brexit, which would have a calamitous impact on the manufacturing industry.

The letter, signed by twenty West Midlands Labour Parliamentarians, reveals the body-shock that the region’s economy and industry would take with a no-deal Brexit. This includes:

Research showing a staggering 12.2% of regional GDP is at risk if the UK crashes out of Europe without a deal;
A potential 40% rise in unemployment across the region next year based on OBR projections.

Liam Byrne MP, Shadow Mayor of the West Midlands, said:

“Our letter to the Prime Minister shows the tremendous capacity we have across the West Midlands to be world leaders in industry and innovation. But it also makes clear that, without a deal, there is a risk of our manufacturing industry could be brought to its knees.

“As our letter demonstrates, the West Midlands can become the Green Workshop of the World. But for our manufacturing industry to thrive in the years to come, it has to survive in the here and now.

“And that’s why our message to Boris Johnson was so clear - don’t betray the Midlands, and get the deal done.”

The full letter text reads as follows:

Dear Prime Minister

We write as the Labour Members of Parliament and Peers for the West Midlands to underline the catastrophic consequence of returning from Brussels without a post-Brexit trade deal, and to put at the forefront of you mind the devastating impact a no-deal Brexit would have on our proud manufacturing industry.

Analysis published by our Chambers of Commerce reveals 12.2% of West Midlands GDP is at risk in no-deal Brexit. That is around £20 billion – and this asteroid would hit our economy right at the time when 552,000 people across the West Midlands metro-area are either on furlough, or self-employed, or on unemployment benefit. And if the Office of Budget Responsibility was right last month, unemployment in our region is forecast to rise by 40% next year.

We simply cannot afford a no-deal Brexit as well, which would threaten a third of West Midlands manufacturing GDP and jeopardise over 12% of services industry which is already reeling from the effects of a sustained Tier 3 lock down with inadequate economic support available for our business community and the self-employed.

Our region was the home of the industrial revolution. Today, we have it within our grasp to become the Green Workshop of the World, the place that makes the electric vehicles, the ‘jet-zeroes’ and the zero-carbon railways the world need to cut carbon. But for our manufacturing industry to thrive in the years to come, it has to survive in the here and now. So, our message to you is very clear: don’t betray the Midlands. Get the deal done.
